Braille Can Be Fun!
January is Braille Literacy Awareness Month in honor of Louis Braille’s Birthday, January 4, 1809.
Not a braille reader myself, I never had any idea that reading braille could be done at the same speed or grace as reading print. As a low vision print reader, however, I am accustomed, at times, to reading slower than I once did, and with lass grace.
Over the years I have been to many professional conferences, or meetings, where a co worker or presenter referred to their notes or speech in braille. Two of my observations were that: 1) They didn’t have their face leaned into their tablet like I do during a presentation, and 2) their reading speed is always very quick and efficient.
If you’re wondering just how efficient, and playful reading braille can be, enjoy this video of a student reading his creative writing assignment.
Learn braille yourself: Hadley has several ways to learn braille—the Braille by Touch workshop series, and the Braille by Sight series. Registration is free. Call Hadley Help Desk at 800-323-4238 for more info.
